Ls Fall Easy S Ruby Win Gap

KOLKATA: A crucial milestone was achieved in the New Garia-Airport Metro corridor's 5km Phase I with the last 160m viaduct gap along the Kavi Subhas-Ruby stretch at Avishikta crossing finally getting bridged. The segment's commercial operations are scheduled in October this year and this viaduct gap was the biggest hurdle for the section.
With the girder-launching of the 18m span last Wednesday, the entire 5km stretch from terminal Kavi Subhas station till Ruby crossing has now become continuous. For more than five years, there was a yawning 160m gap at this intersection at Kalikapur off EM Bypass.

Work was stalled for months when KMDA, custodian of EM Bypass through which much of the 32km Orange Line passes, found the alignment of the proposed Ruby flyover overlapping with the Metro pillar standing in the middle of the crossing.
KMDA asked Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), the railway PSU implementing most of the city's Metro projects, to raze the pier (number 112). The latter offered to reduce Kavi Sukanta station's length instead. The issue was eventually resolved and the Avishikta site was handed over to RVNL last March. Since then RVNL has demolished two smaller pillars, which were part of Kavi Sukanta station, to make space for the flyover's arm turning right towards Prince Anwar Shah Road. Because of the KMDA-RVNL conflict around Pier 112, construction of two more pillars ( and P111) were stalled. Over the last few months these pillars were built and girder-launching of seven spans was done to fill the 160m gap.
"This is a major step towards the New Garia-Airport Metro's Ruby run, due this year," an official of Metro Railway, the umbrella organization for the city's rapid system, said. By June 30, RVNL aims to complete laying ballastless tracks on the viaduct after construction of the deck slab and parapet. "The traffic woes at Avishikta crossing will end after that," said a senior official of RVNL, which is working 24x7 to complete the work at the crossing.
Apart from October commissioning deadline for Phase 1 - Ruby crossing (Hemanta Mukherjee station) to New Garia (Kavi Subhas station) section - there's pressure from Kolkata Police, which wants the busy intersection at the Kalikapur stretch off Bypass freed as soon as possible. An elaborate traffic diversion has been in place for the past one year to allow hassle-free vehicular movement with a large part of the crossing being barricaded to facilitate the crucial Metro construction.
The other gap of the New Garia-Ruby stretch was bridged in September last year when girders were launched between piers 12 and 19 at Baghajatin. Without a continuous viaduct, agencies can execute key tasks like laying tracks, power connection, signalling and telecommunication.
Ukraine Strikes Back In South As Zelensky Visits East Front | page 10
Ukraine has declared that it is mounting a counteroffensive to reclaim territory around the southern port city of Kherson, as Russia devotes the bulk of its forces to pounding eastern Ukraine and capturing Sievierodonetsk, the last Ukrainian controlled city in the Luhansk region. Kherson was the first major city to fall as Russian forces swept north out of Crimea more than three months ago, and it has provided a key staging ground for Russian operations across southern Ukraine. In recent weeks, Russian forces - stretched thin and taking heavy losses as they gain ground in the eastern Donbas region - have concentrated their efforts in the south on fortifying defensive positions. "Hold on Kherson," the Ukrainian military said on Twitter on Sunday morning. "We're coming."
Ukrainian officials have for weeks telegraphed plans to launch a new southern counteroffensive threatening Russia's supply routes into Kherson on bridges over the Dnipro River. But they said the maneuver would require the delivery of Western artillery systems that had been promised by the US and other allies. It was not clear if new weapons were having an effect in the fight to reclaim territory around Kherson, but the Ukrainian military said Saturday evening that Russia had suffered losses as its forces were driven back to "unfavourable" positions around several villages and had been forced to call up reservists to serve as reinforcements, claims that could not be independently verified.
Meanwhile on Sunday, Ukrainian forces endured heavy artillery barrages as they held off Russian attempts to capture Sievierodonetsk, the largest city Ukraine still controls in the eastern region of Luhansk, officials said. Russian shelling has destroyed all of Sievierodonetsk's critical infrastructure, President Volodymyr Zelensky said. "Some 90% of buildings are damaged. More than two-thirds of the city's housing stock has been completely destroyed. There is no telecommunication. There is constant shelling," Zelensky said in a televised speech. "Capturing Sievierodonetsk is a fundamental task for the occupiers ... We do all we can to hold this advance."
Zelensky, meanwhile, made a rare journey outside Kyiv on Sunday to visit frontline positions around the eastern city of Kharkiv, a trip intended to underscore the success of the Ukrainian counteroffensive to drive Russia back from Ukraine's second-largest city. Zelensky's office posted a video on Telegram of him wearing a bulletproof vest and being shown heavily destroyed buildings in Kharkiv and its surroundings. He later said he had fired the local head of the SBU security service on the trip for not working to "defend" the city.agencies
